Where Did Your Family Come From?

Do you know where your family immigrated from? It's not an easy question as once you start researching your family tree, it goes everywhere. Each couple generates so many new branches it's hard to keep track and stay focused. One little hint can lead you down the rabbit hole with mounds of new hints, hits, and sometimes, failures. My family has many lines mostly coming from England. However, I have a significant from France. This lineage migrated to then French Canada and eventually made it's way predominately to New Orleans, Indiana, and Missouri. Another line is from Wales. Now this line didn't have anyone that was "famous" like my French line except this line did create a famous person in my eyes.

My father as depicted in this photograph of my great grandmother at the newly build George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes, Indiana. My great grandmother's parents were from Wales and first settled in Ohio and eventually in Vincennes. The road to tracing these different lines hasn't been easy but it's been worth the hours and years spent researching. My grandfather and father were both researching my family's origins prior to their deaths.  My grandfather would even travel across the country conducting research. I am sure he would be amazed at the tools readily available today.

Remember the Past

Large cities or small towns, whichever you prefer, holds many secrets of the past. Little mundane things such as an old building in the square of a small downtown town might appear to just be either falling apart or maybe it was taken care of. One cannot wonder when walking or driving by what used to be in that old broken down building or how people used to depend on that business to shop. Small towns across America are experiencing a revitalization thanks to many appreciating the past.

Whether the person became famous or did great things, their lives are unique as they were famous to their loved one's. Digging into history is a fun project to learn how life used to be. When researching this town, it was interesting to read the newspaper clippings of how life was similar to how it was with COVID-19. Stories consisted of routine fatality counts, life with social distancing, or masking up. The Spanish Flu was one that left a mark on society as is COVID-19.

As the old saying goes, history repeats itself and we learn that lesson quite often. The store noted above a prosperous store for its time. They feared living too close to the southern border thanks to Morgan and his raiders that he relocated to Princeton, Indiana. That had to be quite a feat in those days with horse and wagons.
